During the winter a third raft was built from employee of Heidelberg Cement . Now all the three rafts lay near together at the gravel pit.

The rafts are an important rescue action for common terns, as the natural breeding sites have disappeared
There are no gravel islands left on the river Rhine.
The narrow gravel banks are quickly flooded.
Predators, such as brown rat, fox, hedgehog and others look for eggs on the banks of the river Rhine and eat them.
