This week saw the completion of our innovative Swift Tower - a key component of our QLA Awards entry - thanks to the generous assistance of SSEN.

The Swift Tower will house up to 11 pairs of Swifts, in individual nesting boxes with pre-lined nesting cups, and includes a solar powered Swift calling device to attract the first tenants. The designs were supplied by Action for Swifts, and the planning application kindly paid for by Hanson.

The nesting box is mounted on an 8m wooden utility pole generously donated by SSEN, and erected by a team of their engineers as part of SSEN's "Be the Difference" scheme.

The Swift Tower is part of our support for the Blackwater Countryside Trust's Save Our Amazing Swifts Project - a valley wide effort to record, provide homes for, and educate the public about Swifts.

Swifts are one of our most iconic birds. Arriving to breed in the UK in spring, they spend only three months here before migrating back to Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the number of Swifts returning to the UK each year is declining rapidly, with a 50% decline in numbers in the last 20 years.
